Young guns in the wars

TWO of Athletic’s youngsters were taken to hospital with serious injuries during the youth-team match at Shrewsbury.
Richard Cowan lost consciousness after receiving a blow to the head, while Nathan Kilcourse needed several stitches between his eyes following an aerial challenge.
Athletic were especially worried about Cowan, a 17-year-old defender, as he was knocked out cold.
Coach Tony Philliskirk said: “Our physio Jon Guy did a great job and thankfully was there with the oxygen. Young Richard had X-rays at hospital and he’s fine.”
Both incidents happened in the first 20 minutes and overshadowed the Youth Alliance game, which Athletic won 2-0 with goals from Liam Dawson and Ryan Brooke.
Both Cowan and Kilcourse (18) are recovering well.
Athletic’s FA Youth Cup third-round tie at Newcastle United will be staged on Tuesday, December 9.
LEE HUGHES wasn’t the only Athletic player to be sent off at the weekend.
Midfield man JP Kalala also saw red for two bookable offences while playing for his loan club, Grimsby, at Bury.
Kalala walked in the first half, but Grimsby went on to secure their first win of the season.
ADMISSION to Athletic’s game at Southend on Saturday costs £20 (adults), £12 (students and over-60s) or £10 (under-16s). Advance tickets are available but fans can pay at the gate.
Tickets in the family stand are also on sale, priced at £20 for one adult and a child.
