ATHLETIC can only envy the potential of Huddersfield Town, Saturday’s opponents, who have an amazing 16,200 season-ticket holders.
Admittedly, the massive increase has been due to a promotion of £100 per ticket as a one-off gesture to mark the Terriers’ centenary year.
It is ensuring a campaign of bumper attendances at The Galpharm Stadium, though not all season-ticket holders attend every game.
Athletic’s visit on Saturday attracted a season’s-best crowd of 16,951 of which 2,980 travelled across the Pennines.
Town have also attracted three other home gates of over 15,000 against Leicester City (16,212), Stockport (15,578) and Scunthorpe (15,228).
BEARING in mind they are arch-rivals, Athletic and Huddersfield Town have incredibly close ties.
There have been 43 players who have appeared for both clubs, including England World Cup winner Ray Wilson and Les Chapman, who was an idol at both clubs.
In more recent times, the list has included Luke Beckett, Tony Carss, Simon Charlton, Lee Duxbury, Delroy Facey, Paul Reid, Lee Richardson, Simon Webster and Clyde Wijnhard.
In addition, the late Ian Greaves and Bobby Collins played for Athletic and later went on to manage Town.
Andy Ritchie played for Athletic before managing both clubs while Neil Warnock and Mick Wadsworth also took charge of both.
