No-one in comfort zone, says Sheridan

JOHN SHERIDAN has denied that his search for a new left-back is a slight on Kelvin Lomax.

The 22-year-old, who usually plays on the right, has made 14 of his 22 league appearances for Athletic this season on the left side of defence.

Athletic manager Sheridan said: “We have lost only two league games this season when Kelvin has played. He is clearly doing something right or is a lucky omen.

“It’s simply that I don’t want players in the comfort zone, knowing they will be playing every week.

“I am lucky to have two excellent players in Neal Eardley and Kelvin Lomax, who are aged 20 and 22 respectively.

“Neal is an excellent player, who does unbelievable things yet at other times can look naive.

“Young players have their ups and down and that is why I want to bring in cover as I want to push them both.”

Sheridan is happy with Athletic’s midfield, although he would ideally like to recruit a player who can unlock opposing defences.

But such players are in short supply and cost a lot more money than Athletic can afford.

“You are looking at a strong-running, ball-playing midfield man. I cannot see Steven Gerrard coming here anyway,” joked Sheridan.

TRUST Oldham, the Oldham Athletic Supporters Trust, will be rolling back the years when they host a fund-raising event at the Playhouse 2 Theatre, Shaw, on Thursday, March 19.

The pie and pint night will feature question and answer sessions with six former players. Ian Wood, Rodger Wylde, Andy Rhodes and David Eyres have confirmed their attendance.

The players and audience will also take part in a sports quiz entitled ‘A Question of Latics’, while there will be a pie and pint at half-time.

Tickets cost £12 and can be booked by e-mailing dmellor@keep-the-faith.co.uk
