HIGH-FLYING Athletic were beaten 1-0 at home by lowly Morecambe in the North-West Conference of the Puma Youth Alliance.

It was a disappointing display by an Athletic side so depleted that they fielded a number of schoolboys and even had a 14-year-old on the substitutes’ bench.

The game appeared to be heading towards a goalless draw until Morecambe scrambled the winner five minutes from time following a corner.

“We were second best in most areas and were no threat going forward, only testing their keeper once in the game,” admitted Athletic’s youth-team coach Tony Philliskirk.

THERE was a sense of trepidation when Scunthorpe United learned they were facing Dean Windass last week.

The 39-year-old Athletic striker has an impressive record against The Iron.

Windass scored twice for Hull against them last season at Glanford Park, while back in 2006 he netted a hat-trick for Bradford City.

ATHLETIC are already looking ahead to warmer days with details finalised for their next golf day, which takes place at Manchester Hopwood on Thursday, May 7.

The cost for a team of four is £300 and this includes bacon rolls and coffee on arrival, 18 holes of golf, a three-course meal and a raffle.
