Dean Windass: happy on the pitch
DEAN WINDASS has no intention of pursuing a career in the media, despite planting the embryonic seeds for a new vocation.
The 39-year-old striker has been entertaining readers of a national newspaper with his weekly column ‘To Hull And Back’ that has since had to incorporate Oldham following his move to Boundary Park.
Windass, who scored his 200th goal in the league against Northampton on Saturday, also writes a blog on the internet as well as making further appearances as a television pundit.
“I enjoy media work, but have no intention of making it a future career,” explained Windass, who is on loan at Boundary Park until the end of the season. “I would like to go into coaching or management.
Windass was approached to write a weekly column chronicling Hull City’s first season in the Premier League.
He went on: “I thought it would be fun and it would also earn me a few quid. It is something I have enjoyed and I find writing quite easy.”
Windass had already honed his writing skills, posting articles on his internet blog.
Television work also enables the veteran frontman to air his views on football.
Windass said: “I like watching any games so to be asked to work on television is brilliant.
“I must say it is easier in a television studio than playing as you never give the ball away!”
Windass, writing in his latest column, realises the clock is now ticking on his playing days as invitations have been sent out for his 40th birthday party on April 1!
But he has discovered a way of prolonging his career . . . by becoming a goalkeeper.
He recalled his exploits between the sticks at Leicester City earlier this month and how Mark Crossley has given him the nickname of ‘Banksy’ after England’s World Cup winning goalkeeper of 1966, Gordon Banks.
