ATHLETIC missed out on the chance to clinch a place in the final of the Manchester Senior Cup following last night’s 4-1 defeat against Bolton.
But they could still progress to the showpiece occasion depending on how other games in the mini league pan out.
At least Athletic’s squad players were given a much-needed workout against formidable opposition as Bolton’s side included internationals Ali Al Habsi, Mustapha Riga, Tamir Cohen and Ebi Smolarek along with the experienced Nicky Hunt and Danny Shittu.
There was controversy in the opening minutes when Athletic were awarded a penalty only for referee Paul Anderson to overturn the decision after consulting his assistant.
Defender Shittu had clearly taken the ball before Lewis Alessandra tumbled over his outstretched leg.
Bolton took a 13th minute through Polish international Smolarek.
And they sealed victory with two goals early in the second half from Javlon Campbell, who somehow squeezed the ball past keeper Josh Bell at the near post, and Obadeyi who rifled in a shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Bell later made amends with an amazing reflex save to turn over a point-blank header from Riga.
Athletic’s 61st minute goal had quality stamped over it as Andy Liddell delivered a perfect cross for Danny Whitaker to score with a superbly struck close-range volley.
They might even had reduced the deficit further when Omani keeper Al Habsi saved superbly from Stefan Stam while Kieran Lee missed a sitter from six yards.
Bolton added a fourth goal late on after another defensive howler let in Robert Sissons.
