MARK CROSSLEY maintains he can save Athletic money by doubling up and doing two jobs for the Boundary Park club.

The 39-year-old, whose Athletic contract expires this summer, is keen to stay, though he accepts his days as the No 1 keeper may be over.

Crossley said: “The idea which has been mentioned is for me to carry on coaching the keepers, and to save money I can be the back-up to Greg (Fleming) or whoever is in goal.

“I could be someone with experience who can play the odd game if needed and by doing the two jobs I can save the club money.”

Crossley, who hopes to be back mid-March after back surgery added: “It wasn’t a major career-threatening problem and I have been assured by the surgeon and the physios that there is no reason why I cannot carry on playing.

“I am hoping to be back for the end of the season and to be available if we get into the play-offs.”

Earlier this season Crossley spoke of a determination to keep playing and emulate his former Nottingham Forest pal Teddy Sheringham who continued until he was 42 years of age.

Crossley said: “Before the back problem, I was delighted with my fitness and in one-and-a-half seasons with Oldham I had missed only six games through injury.

“I was pleased, indeed surprised, to have played so many games (68 matches) as I had not been expecting it.

“If I can get back without any niggles, I would love to be able to carry on until someone tells me they don’t want me.

“I will also know when the time is right to call it a day as my body will tell me.”

Looking ahead, Crossley says coaching/management is a definite career option for the future.

While being injured manager John Sheridan has involved him in the management team, asking for his valued advice from 22-years as a professional.

“I love working with John, who is a great young manager, and I would like to stay with him as a coach in the future,” declared Crossley.

YEOVIL, who Athletic play on Saturday at Huish Park, have appointed Terry Skiverton as their new player-manager.

The Glovers have promoted from within as the 33-year-old defender has been at the club for 10 years making 380 appearances.

Skiverton takes over from Russell Slade who was sacked earlier this week. He will be supported by midfield player Nathan Jones who has been appointed his No 2.
