ATHLETIC manager Dave Penney says he never once doubted Sean Gregan’s ability as a player after the defender made a shock return to Boundary Park.
Six weeks after he was released because of financial constraints at the Coca-Cola League One club, the experienced centre-half was back signing a one-year deal.
Gregan had been linked with League Two outfit Chesterfield, now managed by former Athletic boss John Sheridan.
But Penney is glad to have the 35-year-old on board again to help shore up the defence, where Gregan will more than likely renew his partnership with Reuben Hazell.
Penney said: “The reason why Sean left was purely a financial one and not a footballing one.
“Everyone has to cut their cloth accordingly in times like these. He hadn’t got himself fixed up anywhere and I’m glad we’ve been able to come to an agreement.
“He has a lot of experience and that’s important because we’ve got a very young squad here.
“Some supporters may ask why we have resigned Sean but, as I’ve said before, the reason he was released was not a footballing decision.
“He did very well under Joe Royle at the end of last season and people must remember that. He has impressed me with his attitude and fitness levels.”
Royle, who took over from Sheridan for the last nine games of the season, had recommended that Gregan be offered a new contract after a string of impressive performances.
However, he was still one of a clutch of players to be released.
It is understood that Gregan, who joined Athletic from Leeds United in October 2006 and has so far made 82 appearances for the club, was the highest-earning player on the staff and that had a bearing on the decision.
Penney paid tribute to the player at the time, saying: “Sean is a great professional. He has done well for this football club.
“But I want to freshen things up and put my own stamp on the team. I am looking for young, hungry, fit and athletic players.”
Circumstances have changed since then and Gregan has become Penney’s fourth summer signing, following Rob Purdie, Jon Worthington and Joe Jacobson.
Penney is still looking to bring in three or four more players, and further deals are expected to be tied up soon now that his targets have returned from holiday.
