Penney: we need to be sharper

ATHLETIC manager Dave Penney is looking to put the finishing touches to his squad in their remaining three pre-season friendly games.
Penney is still hoping to bring in another striker and a centre-back before the Coca-Cola League One season opens with a home game against Stockport County on August 8.
Before that, Athletic have tomorrow night’s friendly at Macclesfield and home games with Sunderland and Blackpool to sharpen their skills.
Although generally pleased with Saturday’s goalless draw at Bury, Penney admitted: “It’s always good to keep a clean sheet, but we need to be sharper with our final ball and our finishing.
“That is what these pre-season games are all about, though. We’re steadily building up our match fitness and sharpness.”
The manager does not expect too many squad changes for tomorrow’s trip to Macclesfield, although summer signing Rob Purdie could come into contention after recovering from a slight stomach muscle problem.
One player definitely not involved is the unnamed trialist striker who appeared to sustain a nasty knee injury at Gigg Lane on Saturday.
Penney said: “It was unfortunate for the lad, but we’ll look after him and make sure he is okay.”
