ATHLETIC have two new injury worries as they prepare for tomorrow’s Carling Cup, first-round tie at Carlisle United.

Chris Taylor and Sean Gregan both picked up knocks in Saturday’s goalless draw against Stockport County in the opening match of the season in Coca-Cola League One.

Winger Taylor limped off with a groin strain which he sustained while stretching for the ball. Centre-back Gregan managed to complete the 90 minutes after receiving treatment for a kick.

Athletic were waiting to assess the injuries today when they should have a clearer indication as to the duo’s prospects for tomorrow’s match.

Deane Smalley is another worry after missing Saturday’s game with an injury he picked up in training.

Striker Lewis Alessandra, who was on the substitutes’ bench on Saturday, has returned to Boundary Park after a trial at Blue Square Premier outfit Chester City.

Chester had been hoping to sign Alessandra on loan but have been prevented from doing so due to the club being in administration.

Manager Dave Penney was pleased with his team’s performance against Stockport, bearing in mind there were eight debutants in the starting line up.

Penney said: “Other than not scoring, I think we gelled well and we were a threat going forward.

“If we keep making chances like we did, the goals will come.”

Athletic’s finances have received a massive boost following the sale of Neal Eardley to Blackpool.

Though Athletic aren’t disclosing the exact sum, it is understood to be £350,000.

Eardley (20) made 129 first-team appearances for Athletic and scored 10 goals. He has also won 10 full caps for Wales and is in their squad for this week’s friendly against Montenegro.

Eardley was an unused substitute in Blackpool’s 1-1 draw at QPR.
