Addicks boss accused over sending-off

JASON Jarrett's red card at Charlton left Athletic players, management and club officials fuming.

The centre-back will serve an automatic one-match ban after picking up two yellow cards at the Valley, meaning he will be absent from manager Paul Dickov's line-up for the home game against Yeovil Town on Saturday.

There was little argument with the first of his two bookings, for a first-half foul on Lee Martin.

But Jarrett's second was handed out by referee Rob Shoebridge three minutes from time after a foul was awarded despite there being precious little contact between him and home winger Kyel Reid.

Controversially, Addicks boss Phil Parkinson was not slow to visibly relay his feeling to the match officials that the 30-year-old should see red.

And, despite originally appearing willing to take no action other than giving than a free-kick, Shoebridge then sent Jarrett from the field.

The player registered his own displeasure by flicking the ball towards Charlton's dug-out on his way to the changing rooms, sparking a mini-melee.

Parkinson was unrepentant afterwards, defending his own conduct and slamming Jarrett.

“I don’t think you could argue with the second yellow card," he said.

“I think their bench was a bit annoyed that we appealed, but it was a foul and I think any bench, when it happens right in front of you, would have done the same.

“The lad got himself in more trouble by booting the ball at our bench. He might have missed and hit a young girl or lady in the crowd.

“You can’t do that. You take your punishment and you get off the pitch.”

Dickov believes Jarrett was innocent, stating: “I don’t think it was a sending-off. I have seen it again and we don’t actually think it was a foul, never mind a yellow card.

“I spoke to the referee about it and he made an honest decision. I put my point across and he told me what he was thinking at the time."

Athletic chief executive Alan Hardy made his feelings clear.

"The incident was blown up out of all proportion by the actions of their bench and their players," said Hardy, who confirmed that due to FIFA rules Athletic are unable to appeal against yellow cards.

The 1-1 draw at Charlton resulted in Athletic slipping a place to second in the npower League One table, with Carlisle moving top on goal difference.

ATHLETIC don't anticipate that Saturday's home match with Yeovil at Boundary Park will be postponed.

Yesterday’s fire at the ground caused electrical damage, taking out CCTV footage in two-thirds of the ground.

"We don't anticipate any problems with the match going ahead as planned, but there is a lot of work to be done before then," said Mr Hardy.
