Hill relishing tough schedule

ROCHDALE face a packed schedule which could shape the rest of their season.

Keith Hill's men travel to Leyton Orient tomorrow ahead of Tuesday's derby against Athletic at Spotland.

Dale are at home again just three days later when they entertain FC United in a first-round FA Cup tie screened live by ESPN.

Manager Hill admits the busy programme will test his small squad to the limits, but will have no hesitation in turning to the club's youngsters.

Andrew Tutte cut short his loan stay at Spotland to return to Manchester City this week two months ahead of schedule, while Athletic winger Deane Smalley's month-long loan came to an end on Saturday and Hill will not be extending it.

“It’s going to be a busy period for us and it’s going to stretch our squad, but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Hill said.

"These are the games you relish as a professional footballer and everyone wants to play a part.

“One of the reasons I don’t want to go into the loan market for the sake of it is that we’ve got some good youngsters coming through.

“Players such as Reece Gray and Laurie Bell have caught the eye in the reserves and probably deserve to be part of our first-team preparations.

“We will recruit players if it’s necessary, but not just to make up the numbers.

“I want to bring young players through, although it’s a balancing act, because at the same time I’ve got to make sure we are successful on the pitch."

Hill has a fully-fit squad for the Orient match and will stick with loan recruit Nicky Adams on the right of a front three, alongside Anthony Elding and former Athletic striker Chris O'Grady.
