Matt Smith: expected to make his mark in the Football League
NEW Athletic signing Matt Smith has been backed to take npower League One by storm.
Solihull Moors chairman Nigel Collins, who was powerless to stop the towering target man from leaving the Midlands outfit as he was not tied down to a contract, believes Smith can fire Paul Dickov’s side up the table next term.
The 21-year-old — who is 6ft 6in tall — scored 23 goals in 27 appearances in Blue Square Bet North last season in spells at Redditch United, Droylsden and Solihull, and has penned a two-year deal.
“Oldham have got themselves a very good signing in Matt,” said Collins.
“He is obviously a big lad who is strong in the air, but he also has good feet and he likes to play.
“I think he is quite versatile because he puts himself about, but keeping it on the ground suits him as well.
“It is a step up for him so I don’t know if Oldham will want to throw him straight into first team action — maybe they will see how he performs in pre-season.
“But if they need goals they have certainly made a good choice.
“I don’t see why he can’t continue to score goals at a higher level. I think he will make a big impression in League One.”
Smith revealed he was pursued by several clubs, but knew where he wanted to play football next season after one conversation with Dickov.
He added: “I heard there was interest from a number of clubs, but the most came from Oldham.
“And after speaking to Paul Dickov, I was convinced this was the club for me.”
Hitman Smith is determined to prove wrong the doubters who will question his ability to score goals after jumping up three levels.
“I am not pretending there is not a big gap, but it is up to me to work hard,” he said.
“And if I do, I am confident I can make the step up.”
With one eye on the new campaign, Smith feels the vibrant dressing room atmosphere can push Athletic towards the right end of the table.
“There were a lot of young players at Solihull and they were hungry to succeed. It is similar here and they are the perfect ingredients for a successful side,” he added.
