ATHLETIC are looking to face Barclays Premier League opposition in the build-up to the new season.

A friendly against Blackpool at Boundary Park on July 23 was arranged before the Tangerines’ agonising relegation on the last day of the season.

Boss Paul Dickov is keen to test his charges against top-flight opposition in a home match on July 30.

An away friendly on July 16 is also yet to be arranged.

Chief executive Alan Hardy said: “Paul is still looking at the pre-season situation and has spoken to a couple of Premier League clubs.

“As always it depends on their own schedule and availability, but hopefully something will soon be confirmed.”

Meanwhile, Hardy believes Carl Winchester’s first involvement with Northern Ireland in the Carling Nations Cup can only be of benefit to Athletic.

The promising 18-year-old, who made seven appearances for his club last term, was an unused substitute in the 5-0 defeat to Republic of Ireland on Tuesday night, and is in the squad for tomorrow’s clash with Wales at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Hardy added: “Carl will be gaining valuable experience in the Northern Ireland set-up this week.

“It is good for him which means it is good for us, as his involvement gives us a bit more profile.

“Maybe it is for the best that he didn’t come on when they were losing so heavily. Sometimes young lads are eased into it when the side are winning.”
