But transfer activity is key
WARREN Feeney has tipped Athletic to launch a promotion push next season.
The Northern Ireland international, who is desperate to put behind him a disappointing 2010-11 campaign in which he failed to net an npower League One goal, believes their chances hinge on this summer’s transfer activity.
Manager Paul Dickov has already brought in 6ft 6in striker Matt Smith from Solihull Moors after releasing goalkeepers Dean Brill and Josh Ollerenshaw, centre-backs Andy Todd and Rod McDonald, midfielder Ritchie Jones and forward Lewis Alessandra.
Striker Deane Smalley was offered new terms at Boundary Park but opted to sign a two-year deal at ambitious League Two side Oxford United.
“I think it is going to be an interesting summer at the club,” said Feeney.
“We have a good chance of doing well next season and competing at the right end of the table, but it probably depends on the budget and who the manager is able to bring in.
“Over the next few weeks I am sure we will see more players arrive. I know the manager is going to be doing all he can to improve the squad and give us the best chance of being successful.
“That said, we have a good group of lads here already. The spirit is good and we intend to push towards the top-six next season.”
Whether Feeney (30) remains a key part of Dickov’s plans remains to be seen.
His only goal came in the 3-2 defeat at Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup, during a frustrating campaign constantly interrupted by injury and international duty.
As well as Smith, who netted 23 times in the admittedly less challenging Blue Square Bet North last term, Feeney must compete with Chris Taylor, Ryan Brooke and Reuben Reid for a starting berth.
Reid originally seemed destined for the exit door before accepting reduced wages in order to stay on for another 12 months.
Dickov’s next foray into the transfer market could well be for a goalkeeper, following the departure of Brill, and a midfielder to replace the versatile Jones.
Any arrivals are likely to be dictated by the decisions of captain Reuben Hazell, Paul Black, Cedric Evina, Filipe Morais and Jean-Yves Mvoto.
The Scot wants the quintet to remain at the club, and is waiting to hear from them.
