ATHLETIC could cast their eye over a Spanish striker as their quest for goals continues.

Esteban Casagolda, a 24-year-old forward who is a free agent following his release from Scottish Premier League outfit Motherwell, is set to be among the trialists vying to impress manager Paul Dickov, who prepares to embark on pre-season training at the end of the month.

Casagolda has spent most of his career with Belgian clubs FC Brussels, Diagem and RC Malines, before a successful trial period at Fir Park led to him being offered a one-year deal by Motherwell last summer.

A squad player, he was released by the Scottish Cup finalists after making only three starts and failing to register a goal.

Strikers currently on the books for Athletic — who struggled badly for goals in the latter part of last season — are Ryan Brooke, Warren Feeney, Reuben Reid, Djeny Bembo and new signing from non-league Solihull Moors, Matt Smith.

The draw for the first round of the Carling Cup takes place on Thursday morning at 10am.

Based on final league positions, Athletic are unseeded and in the Northern section of the draw. That means Dickov’s men will face one of the following sides: Blackpool, Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, Burnley, Barnsley, Leicester City, Hull City, Middlesbrough, Coventry City, Peterborough United, Derby County, Doncaster Rovers, Preston North End, Sheffield United, Scunthorpe United, Huddersfield Town, Rochdale or Carlisle United.

TRUST Oldham are holding a ‘Dinner with the Gaffer’ evening at Milan Bar and Restaurant in Lees.
Taking place on Tuesday, July 21 (7.30pm start), it gives fans the chance to join Athletic manager Paul Dickov, former boss Joe Royle and guests. Tickets are priced at £25 each for a three-course meal with a choice of dishes, including a vegetarian option.

To book, contact Richard Attwood on 07590 696973.

Athletic’s League One rivals Bournemouth, who reached the play-off semi-finals, have rejected bids for star men Jason Pearce, Danny Ings and Rhoys Wiggins.
