Big boost!

JEAN-Yves Mvoto has given Athletic’s so-far sleepy summer a major wake-up call by agreeing a two-year deal.

Manager Paul Dickov admitted that the French star, who played with distinction during two loan spells bisected by injury last term, was always his number one target.

And he has landed his man even despite other clubs — Huddersfield Town were one of those interested — waving more cash in Mvoto’s direction.

“It is fantastic news and I am absolutely delighted,” said Dickov, after nailing down only the second signing of a previously non-contracted player after striker Matt Smith.

“We had priorities in the summer and bringing in big Jean was right at the top of those.
“To be fair, he has shown a massive commitment to us. Financially, he had much more lucrative offers from clubs who some people would regard as being bigger than we are.
“But everyone at the club — the staff, the players, the fans — loves him and that is a big factor in our favour.

“The great thing is, he has bought in to what we are trying to do here, in a big way.

“There were a few factors in the bad run that we went on last season. But losing Jean was one of the major ones.

“This shows our intent to keep hold of our best players. And he is ours now, not just on loan.”

After beefing up his backline with the addition of Mvoto, Dickov will continue his efforts to bring in a goalkeeper.

Accrington Stanley’s Alex Cisak (22) is high on the Scot’s wish list, although the clubs are yet to reach an agreement over a fee, which is required as the player is under the age of 24.

“We are talking to players all the time,” added Dickov.

“It has to be the right person for us and they have to integrate into the existing squad.
"Attitude-wise, we want people who believe in what we are trying to do and we don’t want personalities who will upset the applecart.”
