Fans can cheer us all the way to Anfield — Owen
BARRY Owen has called on Athletic fans to turn out in their droves and roar Paul Dickov’s side all the way to Anfield when they host Southend on Tuesday night.
The incentive to win the FA Cup second-round replay could not be greater — a showdown with Barclays Premier League giants Liverpool.
And Owen, chairman of Trust Oldham and one of four board members at the club, believes their chances of clinching the money-spinning tie hinge on the supporters’ backing.
He said: “Southend are a tough team to beat so our fans can be the 12th man on Tuesday night.
“I urge them to buy tickets and make the difference. They were fantastic in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash with Bradford and we need them to do it all over again for the FA Cup game.
“Facing Liverpool at Anfield — one of the most famous venues in the sport — would be a memorable occasion.”
Owen praised the team spirit instilled by Dickov since his arrival at the club last year.
He added: “There is a brilliant feeling at the club and that is largely down to the spirit in the camp, which has helped take us on these cup adventures.
“All the players have impressed me, from veteran Shefki Kuqi to youngster Tom Adeyemi — and I think James Wesolowski epitomises the team’s work ethic at the heart of our midfield.”
Tickets for Tuesday night cost £10 on open sale, £2 for season ticket holders with £1 concessions.
ATHLETIC have been handed an away draw for the first leg of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Area final against Chesterfield.
The club expect the game to take place on Tuesday, January 17, but are awaiting confirmation.
It means Dickov’s team enjoy home advantage in the second leg, which will be televised live on Sky Sports.
The Boundary Park clash has been tentatively pencilled in for either Monday, January 30, Tuesday, February 7 or Wednesday, February 8.
Ticket details are to be announced before this weekend.
