HAND IT TO THEM . . . Athletic fans clap the players off the field at the final whistle.
ATHLETIC fans were in reflective mood after last night’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy heartache.
Oldham resident Andrew Haigh said: “I think we were unlucky. I enjoyed the game, but we just didn’t take our chances.
“I would have gone to Wembley, but there you go. That’s Oldham. I have been supporting them for 50 years so I know what to expect.”
Errol Tonge was hoping a trip to Wembley would have been third time lucky.
He said: “I just think it’s cruel what has happened to Latics. They bombed them all night.
“I went both times in 1990 and 1994 when they didn’t manage to win, so I was hoping it would have been different this time.”
Chris Brogan, with his son Finlay (five), left Boundary Park disappointed. Chris said: “You could see the effort was there, but we didn’t test their ’keeper enough.
“We would have gone to Wembley, but it’s going to be long time before we get the chance again. We will be here on Saturday, though.”
Carl Waters was left to reflect on a two-hour long trip home to Cumbria.
He said: “If we had a goalscorer we would have had the tie done and dusted within 10 minutes.
“If you support Oldham you have got to get used to it.”
Sam Correy already had the hotels booked in London.
She said: “Now we have got to go to London without a trip to Wembley, which is a shame. We’ll just have to go and get drunk, instead.”
