It’s time to sort the men from the boys

Latics’ assistant manager writes every week for Chron Sport
THE BEST team lost on the night. Even Chesterfield's management couldn't work out how we didn't beat them on Monday.

It is clear there are few negatives to take out of the game. One of them, obviously, was the defensive mix-up that led to their goal, late in the game. Other than that, we were excellent. We played some really good football and created a host of chances.

But the most important part of the game of football is finishing those opportunities — and that was something we couldn't manage to do. At the moment, it is a problem for us.

I think it comes down to a little bit of a lack of composure and belief. If we weren't creating openings, we would have a major issue. At the same time, when you aren't putting them away you need to examine why it isn't happening. That is what we are doing.

Shefki Kuqi is currently going through a barren patch and he is probably a little low on confidence.

But he creates more than anyone else in the team, through his enthusiasm and will to win.

Shefki is still a willing runner and selfless worker who gives us everything he has got.

He gets a little frustrated at times. But we can't just rely on one person to get goals and the players are aware of that. In training, when we work on finishing there are 15 players putting their hand up to get involved. Everyone has to chip in.

In terms of picking ourselves up, I don't believe it is all down to the management. It is also the responsibility of the players to realise that the Johnstone's Paint Trophy is gone now and that we have to concentrate on the league.

The coaching staff will encourage the players, but they have to accept defeat graciously. It is now a test of their character, as well as ours.

There isn't any time to feel sorry for ourselves. Everyone is disappointed we didn't win and it goes without saying. That is life. We have to move on now, quickly.

At this time in the season, with a backlog of games coming up, it will sort the men from the boys.
