Happy returns

OUMARE Tounkara admits he was taken aback by the warmth afforded to him by Athletic’s supporters.

The Sunderland forward began his second spell on loan at Boundary Park by making a half-hour showing against Bournemouth.

Almost immediately, he set off to chase a defender down the main stand touchline — a fond reminder of the sort of full-blooded commitment the 21-year-old, from Paris, showed last term.

“I was quite surprised (by the fans’ reaction),” said Tounkara.

“It was absolutely fantastic and it makes it easier for me. I am very happy to see the fans. I always try at all times to give 100-per-cent and work hard.”

Paul Dickov reckons Tounkara 2012 is a leaner and meaner prospect.

Many felt he burned out towards the end of last season. A seven-goal return in 44 games was certainly disappointing.

Fresh and ready for action after a trial spell at Hull City, the player himself is ready to embrace the challenge of going up against Shefki Kuqi, Robbie Simpson and Reuben Reid for a striking spot.

“I have been working very hard at Sunderland, training with the first team and I feel ready to make an impact. Nothing is easy in football. But for me, it is an exciting thing and the competition (for places) is why I love the game.”

As for what happens beyond the end of his loan spell in May, Tounkara is keeping his cards close to his chest.
