Dickov tips Hodgson to be a hit
Date published: 03 May 2012
PAUL Dickov says he can’t understand those critics who attacked Roy Hodgson even before he had even been officially installed as England manager.
Negative press accompanied the decision to hire the experienced 64 year old, currently boss at Premier League side West Brom.
Most people - Dickov included – expected Tottenham's Harry Redknapp would be the man to succeed Fabio Capello. But in turning to Hodgson — the first England manager with previous international experience with Switzerland — Dickov says the FA has chosen a figure who commands respect within the game.
"Like everyone, I am surprised: it looked like it was nailed-on to be Harry Redknapp," said Dickov, who knows well the FA chairman and former Manchester City chief David Bernstein, a member of the selection panel.
"But Roy is a top manager and a top bloke and I think he will do well. It amazes me the way some people are trying to do him down already. His knowledge is fantastic and, speaking to other managers, he is one of the most respected figures out there."
