Kieran Lee: off to Sheffield
ATHLETIC chairman Simon Corney has paid tribute to Kieran Lee - after confirming the popular full-back is leaving Boundary Park.
The 23-year-old former Manchester United player declined the club’s offer of a contract extension and is expected to join newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday.
Manager Paul Dickov was desperate to keep arguably his most consistent performer — Lee won multiple player awards with Athletic — but the lure of Championship football and a pay rise proved too strong for the popular defender.
Corney said: “We gave Kieran an offer - but in Sheffield Wednesday we are talking about a Championship club who attract 27,000 fans to every home match. No club in our division can compete.
“When some players move on you are annoyed because you feel they owe you something, but that is not the case with Kieran at all — I honestly could not be happier for him.”
