ATHLETIC will kick off the 2012-13 season with a cup tie.
The Football League have announced that their knock-out competition — previously the Carling Cup — has a new sponsor and will now be known as the Capital One Cup, as a result of a four-year agreement.
The npower League One programme starts later than usual on Saturday, August 18, pushed back as a result of a desire not to clash with the London Olympics.
It means Athletic’s first game of the new campaign is in the Capital One Cup on either Tuesday, August 14, or Wednesday, August 15.
The new league fixtures are released four days later on Monday, June 18. Athletic manager Paul Dickov will be hoping for better progress in the competition than he has so far managed.
In his first season in charge, Athletic were beaten 2-1 at Scunthorpe in the first round, and last term Carlisle won a penalty shoot-out at Boundary Park, also in the first round, following a 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, Chris Taylor has passed a medical and signed a one-year deal at Millwall.
The Springhead winger departs on a free transfer, having made 285 first-team appearances for the club he supports.
“I can’t wait to get going,” said Taylor, who first learned of Millwall’s interest a month ago and who last week visited the club’s training ground. “It is a new start at a big club.”
