ATHLETIC have been handed a home clash with Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday in the first round of the Capital One Cup.
It means a swift return to Boundary Park for full-back Kieran Lee, who left for the newly-promoted South Yorkshire side on a free transfer last month.
It is a welcome draw for Athletic, who can expect a large contingent of visiting supporters.
Elsewhere, Rochdale entertain Barnsley, who are managed by former Spotland boss Keith Hill. For Athletic, it is a chance to not only get their campaign off to a flying start with a victory, but also shake off the disappointment of recent years in the competition when they bowed out to Scunthorpe and Carlisle in tbe opening round.
In Dickov’s first season at the helm, he saw his side bow out in the first round following a 2-1 defeat at Scunthorpe. And last term brought penalty shoot-out heartache against Carlisle at Boundary Park.
TIES will be played in the week commencing August 13, but if mutually agreed, the Football League will consider requests to play on August 11 or 12.
