Paul’s Taylor swoop

DANIEL TAYLOR is welcomed to Boundary Park by Latics boss Paul Dickov.

Perfectly-timed intervention by Latics manager Paul Dickov is responsible for strike prospect Daniel Taylor’s signing.

The 19-year-old Newcastle United player — described by a North-East source as an "out and out goalscorer" — was on the verge of joining npower League One rivals Preston before the call came from Boundary Park.

After meeting with Dickov and assistant Gerry Taggart, Whitley Bay-born Taylor committed himself to a one-year deal with a club option for a second year.

The deal left Dickov a happy man — but he asked that fans don't expect too much of the newcomer too soon.

"I watched Daniel play last season and saw the potential he had,” explained Dickov. “He was a player we had earmarked for possible loan this season, only to be informed he was being released by Newcastle.

"He is only 19 but has a lot of potential as well as a great attitude and level head.

"We are excited to have him on board and hopefully he will help spread the goals. I hope fans appreciate there are likely to be times when his form dips."

Last season Taylor scored four goals in three games on loan at Ashington in the Northern League. He was also a regular on the scoresheet for both the youth team and reserves.

"This is a great opportunity to play regular first-team football, something I need to be doing," said Taylor.
