Latics on brink of player swoop

ATHLETIC are on the verge of completing the signing of another player for next season.

The club isn’t willing to reveal his identity until a deal is signed, but bosses are known to have been on the trail of Derby’s former Manchester City winger Lee Croft (27).

Wigan-born Croft spent time on loan at Boundary Park eight years ago while with City and is a former Derby teammate of Athletic manager Paul Dickov.

A successful loan to St Johnstone last season was followed by the player being put on the transfer liste by the Rams in May.

Alternatively, it may be that out-of-contract striker Robbie Simpson has decided to extend his stay at Boundary Park. As of late last week, a deal was agreed in principle with the popular 27-year-old ex-Coventry and Huddersfield player.

News is also awaited on the futures of winger Filipe Morais, left-back Bradley Diallo and midfielder Youssouf Mchangama, all of whom have been offered new Athletic deals.

Boss Dickov is keen to secure deals on players to boost the squad before the start of pre-season training next Monday.

PAUL Dickov will turn out for a Manchester City XI against Bristol City in Gerry Gow's testimonial match at Ashton Gate on Saturday, July 28.
