ATHLETIC were today primed to bring in a second signing in as many days, following the arrival of Middlesbrough’s Jonathan Grounds.
The club would say nothing about the player involved, as negotiations were continuing into this morning.
Among those linked with a move to Boundary Park in recent weeks is Lee Croft. Sources suggest the former Manchester City (27), who has a year left on his contract at Derby, is set to join a League One club, possibly on loan.
As for Grounds, who has penned a two-year deal after his release from the Riverside Stadium, manager Paul Dickov expressed his joy at landing a player he has had in his sights for some time.
“We are delighted that Jonathan has taken our offer,” Dickov said. “We have targets in various positions and Jonathan Grounds was our number one target for left-back. It is a really good signing. He is only 24 years old, but has experience in the Premier League and the Championship.
Dickov said the Thornaby-born defender fits into the category of player he is seeking ahead of the new season.
“We are looking at those of the right age and who have the right attitude,” he said.
