Dickov’s search goes on

WITH the new season approaching fast, Athletic are still hoping to snare two more players.

Though content with the squad he has assembled so far, manager Paul Dickov says it is “no secret” that a left winger and a number nine are necessary additions.

But Dickov has made it clear Lee Hughes does not figure in his plans.

It could be that the as-yet-unnamed Portuguese striker who showed neat touches at Fleetwood, or replacement front man and fellow triallist Byron Walker, end up being of more interest. Dickov has already confirmed his strong interest in snapping up the Portugese.

“We are still searching, speaking to Simon (Corney) constantly and to players as well,” said Dickov, who has so far experienced frustration in the chase for Charlton forward Leon Clarke.

“It has to be the right one and at the right money as well. There are too many players out there asking for way more money than we can afford.

“What we want is people like Robbie Simpson, James Wesolowski, Lee Croft — players who a lot of the time are taking reductions in wages to come here and play football.

“We want to bring in a striker and a left-sided midfielder.

“We have got a few options and we are speaking to a few different people."
