Weso: Owls test is useful

JAMES Wesolowski will use Athletic's opening test of the season as a barometer of the squad's progress.

The arrival of Sheffield Wednesday at Boundary Park on Monday for the televised Capital One Cup clash signals the start of competitive action.

Athletic then start their npower League One campaign five days later with an away-day at MK Dons.

"It is a good chance to see how you compete against other teams before the league starts," said the Aussie, who is set to be reunited in central midfield with house-mate Dean Furman for the first time in seven months outside of friendlies.

"At the end of the day that is our main goal, to do well in the league. The cups are something that if you do well, goes alongside that.

"You can't really tell where we are at the moment as we have only played pre-season games. But there is a great spirit in the squad and it's good to be a part of the banter that flies about.”

Wesolowski's season was ruined by a problem shoulder which kept dislocating, eventually requiring surgery.

The 24-year-old former Peterborough man says it feels good again, coming through games without problems.
