Latics cup outsiders
Date published: 10 August 2012
IN an Olympics-enforced break from the norm, the start of the football season has been altered this year meaning that Athletic’s first competitive clash of the campaign is actually a Capital One Cup tie rather than the usual League One opener.
Paul Dickov's men are at home but as they face Championship opposition in Sheffield Wednesday, it’s perhaps not surprising to see Athletic classed as outsiders at 5-2 with Stan James.
BetVictor post 21-20 against the Owls coming out on top after 90
minutes at Boundary Park, where it’s 5-2 via bet365 to finish all square and 6-1 to end one-apiece courtesy of Paddy Power, who also offer 11-1 for Athletic to thrill by prevailing via the drama of a penalty shoot-out.
On their own patch however, Athletic will be confident of causing a minor upset in a competition renowned for shocks in the earlier rounds. So William Hill’s 7-1 for them to nick it after a drawn first half stands out alongside bet365’s 5-1 for the home side to triumph by a one-goal margin.
Home supporters might fancy Skybet’s 11-1 for Dickov’s troops to run out 2-1 winners in a fixture available at 5-6 (BetVictor) to produce three or more goals and 4-6 via Stan James to see both teams find the net.
Bet365 rate Athletic at 7-5 to break the deadlock, BetVictor make that opener at 20-23 to arrive before the 27-minute mark and for the undecided, Dickov's men are available at odds of 6-4 in Stan James’ ‘Draw No Bet’ market.
