FORMER Everton whizz-kid Jose Baxter is hoping to earn a contract with Athletic.

The striker, now a free agent, was invited to training by manager Paul Dickov late last week.

With on-loan Jordan Slew out for an unknown period due to a back injury, 20-year-old Baxter — who turned down the offer of a new deal at Everton in the summer — could provide a useful additional attacking option.

At present, Athletic’s striker pickings are sparse. Back-in-favour Matt Smith, Robbie Simpson and Dan Taylor are the only front men available to Dickov, though Cristian Montano can also be pushed into a central forward role.

Baxter spent the first half of last season on loan at Tranmere and struck the winning goal as Rovers defeated Athletic 1-0 at Prenton Park.

A stocky player, the England youth international appeared set for stardom earlier in his career. But after making his Everton debut at 16, his career has stalled and he only managed 15 appearances in his time with the Premier League club.

Dean Furman has spoken of his pleasure at making a full debut for South Africa against Brazil on Friday night.

Athletic's captain started the international friendly in Sao Paulo and played for more than an hour.

“It has been an incredible experience and one which will live with me for the rest of my life,” Furman said. “It has been surreal and incredible.”
