Latics close in on Baxter deal

PAUL Dickov has confirmed he intends to sign Jose Baxter.

The former Everton striker — once rated as highly as Wayne Rooney at Goodison Park — is training with the club and Athletic's manager is keen for a deal.

"We all know about his ability," said Dickov.

"It is as much him having a look at us as vice versa. Whether we will be able to do anything or not, I don't know. Hopefully, we can sort something out with him."

Baxter had appeared set for a move to the Championship with Crystal Palace before ending up in football purgatory.

He played five friendlies for the Selhurst Park club in the summer, but still found himself one of a host of players without a club a month into the 2012-13 season.

Dickov admits he is short when it comes to strikers and hopes it will be second-time lucky as he attempts to lure the 20-year-old, who impressed on loan at Tranmere a year ago, to Boundary Park.

If Athletic do manage to tie down Baxter, it is doubtful he would be ready for the Notts County game on Saturday.

There are still doubts over the seriousness of the injury keeping newcomer Jordan Slew out of the side.
