Willing attitude delights Dickov

missed opportunity: Robbie Simpson smashes a penalty over the crossbar.
PAUL Dickov was in reflective mood as his side battled to a 2-2 draw against 10-man Notts County.
In a game full of incident, Athletic’s manager felt his team should have been awarded three more penalties to add to the one blazed over the crossbar by Robbie Simpson.
While lamenting the lapses which allowed the visitors to twice take the lead, Dickov was pleased with his team’s character in response.
“There was one team that wanted to win it, and that was us,” said the Athletic boss, who felt the dismissal of Andre Boucaud after only 22 minutes was a harsh decision.
“I have seen the incidents again and I felt we should have had three more penalties. The goal that was offside at the end was very dubious as well.
“Some of our attacking play in the second half was excellent. We were nice and patient and it was hard because they were playing 4-5-0 at times.
“But our Achilles heel of conceding sloppy goals has hit us again. We went behind twice and the boys showed character to get level twice.”
With front duo Matt Derbyshire and Jose Baxter both on the score sheet in their first appearances, Dickov says further positive contributions from the pair will arrive soon.
“I know from my own playing career that when you get off the mark early for a new club, it gives you a lot of confidence,” he added.
