Depleted youths on top
Date published: 21 September 2012
SEVEN players were missing as Athletic under-18s took on Tranmere Rovers in the Football League Youth Alliance North West Conference.
But it didn’t matter too much: they ran out 1-0 winners, thanks to a goal from Carlton McIntosh.
With Chris Sutherland absent due to his first-team call-up and Jack Truelove missing through injury, schoolboy centre-back Ryan Ellison got his first outing of the season for Tony Philliskirk’s depleted side at Chapel Road. Two others, Ben Grant and Jean-Marc Ekegue, also got their chance to impress.
“We defended well and Luke Simpson made three or four outstanding saves,” said Philliskirk.
Athletic started well and took the lead late in the first half when John Pritchard hit Jordan Bove’s cross back across goal for McIntosh to provide the final touch home.
Philliskirk hopes to have Jack Poxon and Truelove back before Athletic take on Port Vale at Chapel Road on Saturday (11am kick-off).
TRUST Oldham have organised another fans’ forum.
Athletic manager Paul Dickov, chairman Simon Corney and a number of players will be present at Royton Band Club on October 10 to field questions.
The event starts at 7.30pm and tickets, available at £5 adults and £3 concessions (under-16s and over-65s), include supper. Tickets: email events@trustoldham.co.uk.
