Dickov’s desire to prove people wrong

DECADES-worth of determination will be called on by Paul Dickov tonight as he bids for a win at Crewe — in arguably the most important game of his career in management.

Athletic have won only twice in 19 matches and desperately need a win at Gresty Road — traditionally a happy hunting ground for the club.

Dickov needs it more than most as his position comes under increasing scrutiny. But the 39-year-old Scot doesn’t fear his predicament.

“One thing I have to do as manager is keep everyone positive,” said an upbeat Dickov, who has no injury or suspension worries. “There is no negativity from me. My desire to put it right and prove people wrong won’t change.

“Nobody understands the supporters’ frustrations more than me. They pay their money, they back us and they want to see results. I honestly believe we are not that far away from picking up that win and building on it again.”

Dickov is likely to keep the same line-up which suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Coventry, with Jose Baxter set to start for the first time away.

Athletic have won on three of the last four visits to Gresty Road.
