Experience to Byrne

JAMES Tarkowski says fellow defender Cliff Byrne has been a big help in developing his game.
Tarkowski benefits from influence of old head
EVEN after aiding Athletic’s quest for a vital victory at Crewe with a goal, there is no guarantee James Tarkowski will start tomorrow’s game against Preston.
All will depend on the state of rival centre-back Jean-Yves Mvoto.
“He has improved,” said manager Paul Dickov, who confirmed there is no ligament damage. “We will assess him again to see how he is.”
Tarkowski replaced the giant French star and later powered in an excellent far-post header from Jose Baxter’s corner.
With Cliff Byrne firmly installed as the experienced stopper in the heart of defence, the New Moston-born player will only appear in the starting XI if Mvoto is not risked.
“We believe Tarky is a top player, but he is going through a learning process,” said Dickov of his 19-year-old defender. “He started the season well, but the team wasn’t performing and his confidence suffered from that.
“We have worked with him and the one thing he has shown is a tremendous attitude, to keep improving and learning, and keep his fitness levels up. Everyone was delighted on Tuesday. He is such a good kid to have around the place.”
Tarkowski was a striker before gradually being moved back to defence; he credits his range of passes to time spent moving the ball around from midfield.
He credits the influence of Byrne: “Whether it’s about going forward or defensive work in training, he has really helped. He even does little sessions with me on the things I need to work on.”
