ATHLETIC have admitted they face a battle to keep hold of key performers Jose Baxter and Dean Furman.
Former Everton prospect Baxter (20) has been in sparkling form as he moves towards full fitness, and struck home a 25-yard free-kick to set the ball rolling against Preston last week.
Admiring glances from rival clubs higher up the professional chain could make tying Baxter down longer-term very difficult.
"We got Jose on a very good deal, there is no question about it," said Athletic chairman Simon Corney, speaking at a fans' forumlast night.
"Keeping him after January will be dependent on performances.
"We want him to do very well, but I'd have liked him to miss that free-kick and for us to still have won the game!
"We have a small chance of keeping him here, even if he loves it. He has good team-mates and a good manager here, so there is a chance."
Captain Furman, away on international duty with South Africa, is one of several players out of contract at the end of the season.
Talks have already taken place regarding a new deal for the 24 year old, but Furman's profile will be raised by his likely involvement in the African Cup of Nations early next year.
"Contrary to what people believe, we don't let any player just walk away," added Corney, who revealed that Athletic turned down a £450,000 bid for Chris Taylor from Scunthorpe two years ago in a bid to aid the club's play-off charge.
He also confirmed a planning application for the new North Stand has been submitted to Oldham Council
"It's down to us and the council to finish things off, but we are nearly there," the chairman added.
