Baxter primed to hit top gear

IN-FORM Jose Baxter has sent out an ominous message to the rest of npower League One - by claiming he’s not yet firing on all cylinders.

The former Everton forward has added creativity and guile since joining the Athletic ranks last month, and supplied substitute Matt Smith with the equaliser at Sheffield United.

But the 20 year old insists there is more to come between now and January 14 when his deal expires.

He said: “I am getting fitter and another game or two and I’ll be there. My fitness is progressing.

“I just tried to put the ball in the danger area for Matt and that is where he is good — whether it is starting or coming on, he always creates chances for himself. He gets in great positions.”

Baxter believes the side was well worth a point against the Blades.

The result extended Athletic’s unbeaten run to three matches, with Leyton Orient up next on Saturday at Boundary Park.

On current form, it appears almost impossible for Dickov to return Baxter to substitute duties, meaning Smith may have to settle for another cameo role.

Baxter feels the team’s latest outing proves Athletic are capable of mixing it with the best in the division.

“We deserved it. In the first half we were the better team and we showed it,” he added.

“After half-time we came out and were a bit sloppy, giving away the penalty.

“But we did well to dig in and get the point we deserved. In the end, we showed what a good side we are.”
