GUIDING LIGHT: Tony Philliskirk shouts orders from the touchline.
ATHLETIC youth team boss Tony Philliskirk called on his players to rediscover their shooting boots after edging another 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town.
The narrow victory was their third by a solitary goal this season.
While Philliskirk was pleased to pick up the points, he was left frustrated by the finishing.
“We should have been three or four goals to the good by half-time, but we missed a number of chances,” he said.
“But we are having to keep clean sheets in order to win, because opportunities are going begging.
Philliskirk was keen to heap praise on his back line.
He added: “Goalkeeper Joel Coleman and the four lads in front of him were solid throughout, and they enjoyed good protection from the players in front of them.”
Athletic are away to Macclesfield on Saturday (11am).
ATHLETIC’S talented teenager, Tomos Clarke, has been called up to the Wales under-17s squad.
The centre-half, who joined the club in the summer, has made rapid progress and is already a regular in the reserves, as well as the youth team.
Wales head to Estonia with England and Northern Ireland for the latest UEFA Championships qualifying round.
They take on Northern Ireland on Sunday, England next Tuesday and hosts Estonia on the Friday.
