Happy to take centre stage

The Latics striker - and midfield man - writes every week for Chron Sport

OUR equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Sheffield United might have been in the dying seconds of injury time, but I think a point is the least we deserved.

We had something like 10 more shots than them and, apart from a sloppy 10 minutes at the start of the second half, we enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and had a goal disallowed - harshly in my view.

All this against a side playing at home and tipped by many for promotion. It would have been gutting to leave empty-handed.

Happily, big Matt Smith popped up in the sixth minute of stoppage time to ensure a share of the spoils and extend our unbeaten run to three games.

I am absolutely delighted for Matt. He is a great lad and seems to have a habit of grabbing these important goals.

If I had done better with a header inside the first 30 seconds we could have been talking about three points.

In Dean Furman’s absence I was deployed in central midfield alongside James Wesolowski.

I had played in that position before for Coventry against Leicester and I actually enjoyed it.

Against Sheffield, I feel James and I won the midfield battle and I was happy to play my part.

I spoke earlier in the season about team spirit and I believe the performances of recent weeks, not just the results, have backed up my claims.

Next up, Leyton Orient come to Boundary Park on Saturday.

Obviously we are hoping to keep the momentum going.

I expect Saturday to be a good advert for npower League One because two good teams who like to play football the right way will be going toe-to-toe.
