ROBBIE Simpson has made his mark in midfield.
ROBBIE Simpson has been rolling back the years as a central midfielder in Athletic’s last two matches.
It may be the 27 year old will step aside at Brunton Park tonight (7.45pm kick-off) to make way for captain Dean Furman.
Even so, it shows the current range of options within the squad.
Not many expected him to be named Furman’s engine-room replacement when the skipper was on international duty.
But Simpson has done little wrong in his two midfield appearances - a role, it turns out, that isn’t entirely new to him
“When I first went to Norwich I was a central midfielder. It was at Cambridge that they pushed me further forward.
“I also played there once or twice for Coventry. In the last couple of games, I have done okay and if I continue to play there I think I will get better and better as I learn the position again.
“There is competition for places in all areas with the quality we have. So everyone knows they must be at the top of their game.
“I am enjoying it. Me and James Wesolowski seem to have clicked in there, which is good.”
As for tonight's test against the Cumbrians, Simpson feels there is unfinished business.
Last season Athletic led 3-0 at half-time before a comeback from the home team earned a draw.
“We owe them one at their place, after last year,” Simpson said. “In the first half we were outstanding. We let two points slip and talked all season about how we let that one go. It is a chance to put that right.”
