Dickov’s goal remains safety

THE main goal for Athletic this season has always been to preserve npower League One status, Paul Dickov has reiterated.
Recent results have not matched up to what many see as a talented group of players.
But Athletic's boss says the bottom line remains the same it has always been during his time at Boundary Park.
"I am loathe to say it," said Dickov. "But my mandate since I have been at the club is to keep us up.
"The way I am, I want more than that. That is why I try to get the players in to push us up.
"But the harsh reality is, when we sat down in the summer, and Simon (Corney, chairman) said it at the fans' forum a few weeks ago, the priority is to stay up."
LUCKY charm Connor Brown's impact at Hartlepool attracted praise from his manager.
The full-back slotted in on the left side of defence against Hartlepool in place of suspended Jonathan Grounds and was solid in Athletic's victory.
It was the 21-year-old's second start in pro football. His first came at Portsmouth — which also brought a win, but with it a later suspension for the ex-Sheffield United player.
Cliff Byrne was incorrectly identified and dismissed at Fratton Park, with Brown instead getting the red card and three-match suspension.
That in turn saw Paul Dickov bring in Reece Wabara on loan from Manchester City to fill the gap.
"Connor is a great kid," Dickov said. "He reminded me that when he plays, we don't lose — though it is only two games!
"His attitude is top. What you see is what you get and he is full of endeavour and a very good defender.”
