Invest in youth side - or scrap it?

ATHLETIC are about to make a decision that will shape the club's philosophy and costs for years to come.
The board plans either to scrap the youth team - or make it the heart of the club. The crucial decision will be made before the end of February - but not before fans have had their say.
Following his 12-month costs review, director Barry Owen believes Athletic need either to follow the example of Crewe by ploughing money into youth development, or not do it at all.
Owen said: "If we are going to invest in youth development, there is an argument for doing it properly or not at all. Last season it cost us £437,000, of which £210,000 was paid for by the football authorities, leaving us to find roughly £20,000 per month.
"Do we do a Crewe by not signing established professionals on loan and cutting the first team wage bill to invest more in youth; or do we scrap the youth system and put more money into the first team?
“We want to open it up for debate and hear what the supporters think.”
Owen expects opinion to be split.
“Both ideas have pros and cons. If the youth team was removed, it would free more money for the first team but you risk losing some of the spirit of the club.
“If we made it the focal point, it could pay off and be effective long-term - but the fans might have to put up with a couple of relegations, as did Crewe supporters.
“There is plenty to debate.”
