Jose Baxter: glad to rejoin the Latics fold

Praise for boss after signing new contract
JOSE Baxter felt a debt of gratitude towards Athletic and boss Paul Dickov — so he snubbed Championship clubs to pen a two-and-a-half year deal at Boundary Park.

The fans’ favourite could easily have earned more money and played at a higher level by making a free switch to one of a trio of interested sides.

But popular Scouser Baxter revealed he is playing for his “hero”.

He said: “There were options and I could have gone to one of the Championship clubs who expressed an interest, but I had a long think.

“That’s when it hit home that this club took a gamble on me when I had no-one. I wasn't playing anywhere and they brought me here. It is only right I pay them a bit of respect.

“I am playing for a great manager. He is a legend in my eyes and he has helped me no end since I arrived here.

"He was a fantastic player and growing up, I used to love watching him in action.

“Now the deal is done I can look forward to my future here and hopefully continue the way it has gone so far.

“The fans have been different class as well, I cannot thank them enough. They have made me feel at home since day one.

Baxter was bitterly disappointed by the loss to Brentford - but believes Athletic will bounce back.

Boss Dickov was delighted to see Baxter commit his future to the club.

He said: “I think a lot of credit has to go to Jose's representatives.

These days you come across a lot of nonsense with agents but Jose is a grounded lad with a great family and representatives, and they helped make it possible. It is great news.”
