IT IS difficult to put into words what the Liverpool win meant.
It was a fantastic day for everyone at the club — from the press who cover us to the staff, supporters, chairman and players.
What we really needed was a home win. To achieve the one we did in front of a packed crowd at Boundary Park will hopefully help to bring back fans.
The noise was something else, even before the game. When we got the early goal, supporters really got behind us.
That kind of backing gives players extra confidence to be brave on the ball.
The plan from the off was for Smudge (Matt Smith) and I to get in the faces of their defence. We were fired up. Watching the game back, I had forgotten my tackle on Joe Allen in the opening 30 seconds. His ankle went over but in fairness to him he just got up and laughed it off.
The Liverpool game was by far the best performance of Smudge's career. He terrorised Sebastian Coates.
Carl Winchester was outstanding when he came on; as was James Wesolowski, in a more disciplined role just in front of the back four. It was probably Jonathan Grounds' best game for us, while at the back Cliff Byrne and Jean-Yves Mvoto were immense.
It was a proper cup tie. Apparently Freddie Flintoff, who was at Boundary Park, said afterwards it was the best match he had ever seen.
We face Walsall in the league on Saturday and they are a team in great form. That game is at the forefront of our minds now. After that we have two home matches and need the points from them. We’ll give it everything.
On Monday I came across the boots I wore when I scored at Anfield last year.
Having had so many messages from fans both before and after the game on Sunday, I have decided to give them away. For a chance to win, log on to my Facebook site (www.facebook.com/RobbieSimmo), like the page and post the best holiday snap you can find. The best one will be the winner. Good luck!
