LEE CROFT . . . may have to settle for a place on the substitutes’ bench after missing Saturday’s game against Carlisle with a foot injury.
‘We need players who can deal with the pressure’
LATE decisions will be made by Athletic boss Lee Johnson as he puts together a line-up capable of beating Preston tonight.
Lee Croft is likely to be on the bench as he recovers from painful bruising which ruled him out of Saturday’s Carlisle defeat.
Johnson had 27 players training yesterday and must make a series of difficult choices. An impressive second half on Saturday could mean starts for Kirk Millar and David Mellor. Matt Smith may also start at Deepdale if Athletic’s manager decides to go a more direct route.
“It is almost about the ones with the best mindset, who can deal with the pressure of the situation,” said Johnson, hunting his first away win as manager.
“I’m still not fully sure of the best route; we will assess a few little niggles and make a decision.”
Johnson is relishing pitting his wits against experienced counterpart Simon Grayson tonight — a Preston win will give his side safety from relegation
This game is one of Athletic’s two matches in hand over drop rivals Scunthorpe. Returning home with points tonight would provide a major Athletic boost ahead of Saturday’s vital derby at Bury.
“Simon Grayson is a very good manager so it will be good to test myself against him,” Johnson added.
“They are a dangerous opponent at the moment.”
Athletic striker Jose Baxter, whose penalty was his15th goal of the season, is concentrating on points for the team rather than a personal tally.
“I’d rather not score myself and the team win,” he said. “If I round the ’keeper and someone is in a better position I will always pass the ball.”
JOHNSON may make a playing appearance for the reserves tomorrow to run the rule over some of the club's younger personnel.
Athletic's second string are in action against Bury at Radcliffe Borough (1pm kick-off).
But Johnson has ruled out a first-team run-out.
