Sweet and sour for me

In what might be the Latics star’s final column for Chron Sport, Robbie reflects on his season’s personal highs and lows.
HIGHS: The FA Cup third-round tie at Nottingham Forest.

In the second half, for a 10-minute period we absolutely blitzed them. I scored twice and would have had one of the quickest-ever hat-tricks had the goalkeeper not saved a shot with his legs.

That tie and the three games I enjoyed as captain will stay with me for an awfully long time.

I also look back to our very first fixture in the Capital One Cup. We were two goals up against Sheffield Wednesday at half-time and some fans said they had not seen an Athletic side play better. But we went on to concede four goals after that in a game that sums up our season.

LOWS: Not one specific moment or game as such, but playing through virtually the whole season while injured. Right since pre-season, I have not felt 100-per-cent fit — coming on at Leyton Orient was the best I've been since then. How was that for timing?

It has been frustrating, both personally and on a team footing. The people closest to me — including my family, friends and the managers I have played under — have known and understood the situation.

There might be people on the outside who have looked in and asked what's wrong.

Hopefully I can come back strongly next season.

So it's time to sign off now. I wish every Athletic fan a great summer.
