ATHLETIC manager Lee Johnson has admitted he isn’t a big fan of drafting in rafts of temporary recruits.

Outside of the Premier League, loan deals are commonplace as clubs give their squads short-term boosts by borrowing players who would normally be out of their reach financially.

The system has worked better for some clubs than others and Johnson, who is busy trying to make deals for new players, can see pros and cons.

“There’s no doubt loan transfers can work very positively for all parties — as long as a deal is right for both clubs,” said Johnson.

“For sides like us, maybe drafting in a young player from a club higher up will offer him vital experience, while we’re getting him on the cheap.

“In terms of experienced players, we were certainly helped by players like Chris Iwelumo and Lee Barnard last season. They brought good experience into the squad and that rubbed off on some of the younger lads.”

But Johnson has some doubts about the system, and despite not having much money for permanent transfers, will think hard before pursuing temporary captures.

“It’s important we put in the research,” he said. “We still have to learn about every aspect of a player, just as we would when bringing in a player permanently — it’s as simple as that.

“The whole loan mentality can be a difficult one, though. I’ve been a loan player and it can be a different mindset.”

Johnson expects to make announcements about signings soon.
