MATT Smith is “over the moon” with his new two-year contract with mighty Leeds United.
The 24-year-old striker will leave Boundary Park at the end of the month to move across the Pennines on a free transfer.
He becomes Brian McDermott’s first signing: the new Leeds manager held off competition from rivals elsewhere in the division for Smith’s signature.
“I am absolutely delighted,” said Smith, who shot to national attention with FA Cup goals in televised ties against Liverpool and Everton. “Once I heard of the interest from Leeds United I was over the moon.
“It is a massive club with a massive history and I'm looking forward to being a part of it.
“Growing up as a kid, Leeds were an absolute powerhouse. It’s a huge club with a terrific fan base.
“And with what Brian did at Reading, which is obviously something he will want to do here, everything is just perfect, really.”
Out of contract Smith won’t make Athletic any money in fees, but his goals in 2012-13 were vital in keeping the club financially afloat in League One and powering the remarkable FA Cup run. The former Cheltenham trainee scored 11 goals in 40 appearances — most as a substitute.
McDermott did his homework before deciding to make the swoop: “I’m really pleased,” the Leeds boss told the club website.
“Matt’s from a division below and we are looking for someone with potential, who can be better, and who the fans can take to.”
